Hello to all. I just found the find of a lifetime. I came back from Iraq in April (2nd tour) and was looking to get another bike. My Dad and I looked around and even went to the local Victory store ( his other "shop"). When I told my dad that I wanted to look at a 1979 Yamaha 1100 he reluctantly went along. Although the bike looked pretty good, it still needed work. Discouraged, my dad circled a few ads in the local paper. One was an ad for a "basket case" Goldwing. I called and got to talking to the owner. He told me that the bike had been "endo'd". The next ad I called on ended up being the find of the century! I called this gentleman on his ad and he told me that he had gotten to old to ride and that he was selling all his bikes. After talking to him and finding out about the bike, I took off to Union Gap, Wa., about 70 miles up the road from the house.
When I got there, I met with the guy and he took me to the bike: a 1975 GL1000 with 4795 original miles. The bike had recently been completely rebuilt as it had been sitting in storage since 1980! After asking him if he would take $1600 for it (he wanted to recoup the $2000 he spent on the rebuild), he stated that he would sell it to "another vet" for that price. He walked up to the bike, and with a quick flip of the throttle, he started it up. I quickly loaded the bike and transferred the title before heading home.
On the way home, the guy with the "basket case" called and told me that he had found two sets of complete carb assemblies, to go with the complete motor/trans that he had. When I got home I set it inside my dad's shop and we just gawked over how clean the bike was. The next morning, I went to Oregon and picked up a complete 1976 GL1000 motor/trans w/2 complete carb assemblies, all the covers, frame, rear hub assembly and a decent seat for $70.
So, for my first "Wing" I feel I did good. I will be placing photo's soon.
