I built my gl1000 from boxes of bits after some one else had stripped it, it was the single most chalenging jigsaw puzzle I have ever tryed and..... I rode it 300miles for the first time last week.

Congrats on the basket case rebuild there! 8) I have stripped and rebuilt and in the finishing side of an 83 Aspencade but not taken on a basket case.
You must feel pretty happy to have accomplished such a project!

How about a photo?

I will be attempting steering bearing replacement. I have rebuilt the carbs before and will doing that again in the future. :(
I've done other regular maintainence issues but would never attempt major repairs. I am not nearly qualified.
There certainly is a lack of experts who want to work on these bikes. Of course that probably has to do with the fact that there's maybe 3, 75-77 Wings within 200 miles of me that still run let alone look good.

It is a 2002 GL1800 that rolled and was dismantled by the 2nd owner. He had intentions of rebuilding it but lost interest.
I picked it up for a decent price and am about to complete it after about 3 months of chipping away at it..

It only has 2998 miles on the clock! :D

But then again, it isn't a classic 4 cylinder...

Take care!!

Hi,
I'm a new kid on the block from Perth Western Australia posting for the firsttime.

I have two 1975 gl1000 and a BMW R1200C on which I do my own basic repairs, upgrades and maintenance.

I have been looking at this site for several years now and look forward to getting to know other fellow enthusiasts.

My 77 sat in a storage unit for 5 years before I bought it. I rebuilt the carbs, cleaned and relined the gas tank, rebuilt the forks, complete brake system tracked down some eletric problems replaced timing belts themostat and cleaned up things but if it ever needs a clutch or engine rebuild I will probably send it out to a shop. I would say I do most my own wrenching. If i didn't enjoy tinkering I would go buy a new bike. :D

I do most of my own work but will send out if called for. You have to know your limitations.

So far I have been able to do all the work myself. Haven't had to do anything major yet on my 1987 GL1200i Interstate.
